Chicago Tribune: Chicago Forward – The Crucial, But Limited, Role of Schools in Keeping Our Youth on Track

At the beginning of the year, the Chicago Tribune Editorial Board launched a six-month initiative aimed at addressing the challenge of reaching Chicagoland’s disconnected youth. According to Thrive Chicago, about 47,000 youth ages 16 to 24 were neither working nor going to school in 2019. That’s 15 percent.

The Editorial Board took a closer look at the role of schools – and educational nonprofits – in helping keep Chicago’s youth on track for success. “Consider the wide-reaching Communities In Schools, a national organization that in Chicago partners with 175 CPS schools,” the article stated. “It provides a range of dropout prevention and student enrichment programs that have been proven to keep kids in school and, in some cases, boost math and reading skills.” The article cites the gold-standard evaluation of our organization, conducted in 2015 by Professor David Figlio of Northwestern University.
