COMMUNITY PARTNERS

Communities In Schools of Chicago works with 200+ organizations that are based across metropolitan Chicago. These organizations are called our community partners, and they are committed to joining us into supporting the academic, social-emotional, physical and mental well-being of Chicago public school students by providing programs and services — at no cost to the students — that address the prioritized needs identified by their school leaders. Some community partners provide programming inside of schools, during the school day; others offer special programs, performances, and opportunities for students to explore the city and surrounding communities.

With community partnerships that focus on the arts, health and wellness, behavioral and mental health, and college and career readiness, our allies in dropout prevention are diverse. They include everything from licensed-therapists in private practice and dedicated health educators to museums and other cultural institutions that make our city great.

We know that our impact on schools is as strong as our partners’ impact on students, so we support our partners in many ways. Through our NAVIGATE training series, we offer training and support to our community partners, helping to strengthen their skills in areas like curriculum development, classroom management, and program assessment. Several networking opportunities throughout the year hosted by CIS of Chicago enhance collaboration and resource sharing among our partners. Throughout the year, our Community Partnership Team members work closely with other members of our program team to match schools to programs that address their top program priorities.

A COMMUNITY PARTNER SUCCESS STORY

When a planned field trip falls through, schools run the risk of being left with many disappointed students on their hands.

That happened at Webster Elementary School, in the city’s West Garfield Park community, in 2018-2019. Fortunately, Webster is a partner of CIS of Chicago’s Intensive school network.

When one of Webster’s long-anticipated eighth-grade field trips fell through, our Student Supports Manager at the school, Melissa Richardson, went into action. She contacted her colleagues on our Community Partnership Team: College and Career Readiness Partnership Specialist Adam Lindemulder and Arts Partnership Specialist Emma MacLean. Adam and Emma got on the case right away – and in no time the disappointed Webster eighth graders ended up getting not one, but two valuable experiences in one day.

Emma initially suggested the Smart Museum of Art on the University of Chicago (U of C) campus for a field trip destination. It turned out that the museum was between exhibits and was not able to host the students, but the museum’s Manager of Community Engagement and Arts Learning had another idea. He put Emma in contact with the Youth and Family Coordinator at the U of C’s nearby Oriental Institute. Soon enough, the students were set for a visit to the Institute for a hands-on lesson on artifacts from Egypt, Mesopotamia, and elsewhere in the ancient Middle East.

That wasn’t all. Adam also worked with U of C’s Admissions Office so that after their museum visit the students could have a chance to tour U of C’s campus. Most had never been to the storied campus in their own city, so it was an extra special perk.

In the process, CIS of Chicago secured the Oriental Institute and the U of C Admissions Office as community partners. More programs with the Oriental Institute are on the horizon, and Adam hopes to launch programs with the admissions office that are not limited to prospective U of C students.

“Another thing we’re hoping to do in the future in addition to the campus tours is workshops for high schoolers. I’m envisioning admissions officers coming out to schools and saying things like: ‘Here’s what makes a good college essay. Here is what the college application or financial aid process looks like.” Whether students are considering applying to U of C or not, this will let them know that there is a great resource in their city, not too far from where they go to school,” Adam said.

A rigorous impact evaluation of CIS of Chicago found that linking support services to schools had an educationally and statistically significant positive impact on elementary school students’ math and reading ability — both leading indicators for high-school graduation.
